How to rank in Google AI Overviews

What Google says, what gets cited, and what to do this month.

AI Overviews are the AI-written answers at the top of many Google searches. Each one links to a handful of pages. Google says there's no special trick to being one of them.

The page has to be indexed, eligible to show with a snippet, and good at answering the question. Most small business sites fall short on the last part.

What Google says.

Google's documentation on AI features says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no need for AI text files or special markup.

Its list is ordinary SEO: let Google crawl the page, link to it from elsewhere on your site, put important content in text rather than images, keep structured data matching what's on the page, and keep your Google Business Profile up to date. Clicks from AI Overviews show up in Search Console with the rest of your web traffic.

What gets cited.

  1. 01Pages that answer the question early

The answer sits in the first two sentences under a heading that matches the question.
  2. 02Specific details

Prices, suburbs, timeframes and steps. Vague pages give the AI nothing to quote.
  3. 03Pages that already rank

AI Overviews usually draw on pages that rank well for the search, so normal SEO comes first.
  4. 04Businesses others mention

Reviews, directories and press coverage tell Google other people vouch for you.

What to do this month.

  1. 01Check the page is indexed

Use URL Inspection in Search Console.
  2. 02Answer first

Put the answer in the first two sentences, then the detail.
  3. 03Add what only you can say

Your price range, the suburbs you cover, how long it takes, who it's for.
  4. 04Add the questions customers ask

Write short answers on the page and mark them up with FAQ schema that matches the text.
  5. 05Fill in your Google Business Profile

For local searches it feeds the answer too.
  6. 06Get mentioned elsewhere

The two or three directories that matter in your industry, local press, suppliers and partners.

What doesn't help.

Repeating keywords. Pages written for machines rather than people. Special AI files for Google, which Google says it doesn't need. An llms.txt file is a small signal for other AI tools, not for Google. And anyone selling a guaranteed spot in an AI answer.

Checking it's working.

Search the questions your customers ask in a private window and note which sites are cited. Do it monthly with the same questions. Search Console doesn't separate AI Overview clicks, so watch the queries each page is meant to answer. More in the AI visibility guide.

AI Overview questions.

Can I pay to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Ads can appear near them, but the cited links aren't for sale.

Can I stop my site appearing in them?

Yes, with snippet controls like nosnippet, but they also limit how your page shows in normal results.

Do AI Overviews take clicks away?

On some searches, yes. Google says the clicks that do come through tend to stay longer on the site. Track your own numbers rather than relying on either claim.

How long does it take?

About as long as normal SEO: first movement in weeks, real results in three to six months.
